Monday, July 21, 2014 (Martha's Vineyard): We have been plagued by a stationary front since we left Newport on the 14th. The result is periods of sun and overcast punctuated by rain, heavy at times. The overcast looked downright threatening but all of our weather sources confirmed that the front wasn't moving and the winds would be light. As we cleared Point Judith (right), the western horizon looked frightful but we had faith in the weather gods. 

Monday, July 14, 2014 (Newport, RI): We left Greenport, NY, after a very pleasant two days. The trip up to Newport is about 55 nM. We wanted to arrive midmorning, which meant shoving off around 06:30. The tide is not quite low. Nevertheless, it is low enough to show us how skimpy the channel into Greenport really is.

Tuesday, July 8, 2014 (Glen Cove to Greenport, NY): We say good-bye to Brewer's and Glen Cove, having had a pleasant stay. At 07:00, The Sound is flat calm reflecting the rising sun. The tide is low but this close to the bank we have 15 feet of water. However, several right angle turns force us to do 3-pointers with a little joystick maneuvering. The bones of an old boat sticking up are not exactly a confidence builder.

Sunday, July 6, 2014 (Atlantic City to Glen Cove, NY): Our destination for today is Brewer's Marina in Glen Cove, NY, some 95 nm distant. The ferry traffic at the lower end of Manhattan can be brutal. They are big and the drivers don't seem to care who is sharing the waterway. I anticipate the East River being a bit slow.

Sunday, June 29, 2014 (Cape May to Atlantic City): As I mentioned earlier we were anxious to leave Utsch's. As soon as I was sure we wouldn't suck the bottom muck into our intakes we skedaddled at 07:30. Navigating Utsch's meager channel was as much fun going out as coming in. Thank G_d for the joystick. Getting 47 feet around a narrow 90-degree turn leaves paper thickness between corners and unfriendly pilings.
